The unnumbered member of the set, the cue ball is traditionally solid white and serves as the only ball struck directly by the cue. This example has seen enough service to have acquired a constellation of blue chalk marks, scuffs, and small abrasions—an informal record of countless breaks, draw shots, miscues, and less-than-delicate encounters with the floor.

It has always tried very hard. Unfortunately, trying hard has not prevented it from being scratched into side pockets, launched off tables, trapped behind the eight, or repeatedly jabbed by chalk-covered cue tips. It has put in its time and is beginning to look forward to retirement.
