1971 Fender Precision Bass

1971 Fender Precision Bass

When I arrived at college in 1986 I immediately hooked up with Frank and George - literally on day one. We proceeded to play music together as a band for the entire 4 years (and occasionally beyond). Since George was a far superior guitar player, I happily took on the bass role . . . at the time I had a very chilly, black Kalamazoo bass that kind of got the job done, but a girl in our entryway lent me this P-Bass and I managed to hang on to it, eventually buying it from her for some long-forgotten sum.  This one has been "reliced" by years of playing and sounds and feels as great as it looks.  100% original as far as I know.

First gig picture is from a Fortune Panda gig at Sean O'Toole's on Main St in Plymouth, MA probably 2004 or so. Matt Whipple and I used to swap back and forth on the bass and guitar. Sean O'Toole's became TBones Roadhouse, then Proof 22, and now an empty shell waiting for some other entrepreneur to come along and try to make a go of it. At one point I had to go down to the super creepy cellar to retrieve an extension cord. There was a dark, dingy lounge area in one corner that looked like the set for a snuff film starring the Gimp.

The amp in the background is a 1960's vintage Kustom in blue sparkle tuck-and-roll upholstery, with a complimentary silver sparkle 2x16" ported cabinet -- very capable as a bass amp.  Purchased the afternoon of the gig from Music Unlimited in Kingston as nobody had a bass amp.  Weighs about 1,000 lbs so it rarely leaves the house these days.

Last note: I was playing Rush covers on this bass with Greg Marien (drums) and Rob Spence (guitar) the night I met my wife.
